Pink Carpet in Cardiff
It was the ‘pink’ carpet treatment for four-year-old Alisha Horwood as she arrived at a fundraiser event in Aberbargoed. Stepping out of a limousine like a true star Alisha, complete with pink cowboy hat and cuddly toy, was the VIP guest at the Balfour Club recently.
Alisha, who suffers from a diaphragmatic hernia, was born with only one lung. After undergoing major surgery at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff she spent a few days in intensive care and was also put on the high dependency ward before finally being well enough to go to the children’s ward.
But the brave little girl she wasn’t out of the woods just yet. After all she had been through, already, she had to undergo a blood transfusion, which put her back onto the high dependency ward - once more. Her parent and grand mother were so grateful for all the help they received from the children’s ward at the hospital that they wanted to give something back.
It costs approximately £2,000 per day to keep a child in intensive care, so the family thought they would raise some money to help others. Alisha’s family got in touch with Councillor Alan Higgs who immediately started organising the “best charity event the Upper Rhymney Valley has ever seen”.
He also organised for a limousine hire company to collect the little girl and take her down to the Balfour Club in Aberbargoed; he put a cuddly toy and pink cowboy hat for her in the limo. The chauffer then took her for a limousine drive around the villages before taking her to the club. The night raised about £1,600 thanks to some top prizes up for grabs in the raffle including a bottle of whiskey donated from Gordon Brown.
